A common mistake many beginner scorers make is waiting until all three darts have been thrown before starting to calculate. This is not a good idea, as you simply don’t have the time for that.
Save time by always counting along immediately
So, what should you do instead? When you’re scoring, always count along with what the player throws.
Examples:
If the player throws: 20, 18, and then 5
- Count immediately: 20 > 38 > 43
If the player throws: 20, 20 en 18
- Count immediately: 20 > 40 > 58
EA golden rule, though there are a few exceptions.
20 is easier to calculate
There is an exception, because 20 is just very easy to calculate. If the player throws a 20 first and then a T17, ignore the 20 and start with T17 = 51. Then add the 20. 51 + 20 is easier to calculate than the other way around. Calculation magic!
Another application of the easy 20
Do you need to quickly add 18? Then do +20 - 2.
Or for 17, do +20 - 3. Seriously, +20 - 3 is faster than +17.
Examples:
- 57 + 18 = 77 – 2
- 95 + 17 = 115 – 3
So, if you haven’t been doing this yet, start counting along next time, and you’ll save heaps of time.
