Learning to write scores accurately takes a lot of practice. If you're reading these tips, chances are you're also an avid viewer of Darts on TV. Grab a notepad and pen and count along.
Start Simple: Count for One Player
Begin by counting the scores for just one (your favorite) player. The advantage is that you can immediately check your accuracy using the scorebar at the bottom of the screen.
Steps to Improve:
- Watch and listen: Look at the thrown score and listen to what the caller says. This can be challenging with commentators constantly talking, but usually, the combination of seeing and hearing is enough.
- Verify: Use the scorebar to verify your counts.
Advanced Practice:
- Count for two players: Double the fun and challenge by keeping track of scores for both players simultaneously.
- Count without sound: Rely solely on visual cues by muting the sound.
Tips for Enhanced Practice:
- YouTube matches: You don't have to wait for Darts on TV. YouTube is full of thousands of matches featuring your favorite players.
- PDC TV subscription: If commentary is distracting, consider subscribing to PDC TV (approximately €75/year). Many 'floor tournaments' are available, with only the first board having commentary, reducing distractions for better practice.
Believe me, after a while, this becomes more enjoyable than watching some boring matches. But be warned, your TV evenings will fly by!
By incorporating these practices, you'll improve your scorekeeping skills and enjoy the process of learning.
